Starting a new team is never easy and requires support

Starting a new team is not easy. Especially one that is made up of young associates that are trying hard to fit into a new company.  Reputation is key and since this young new team didn’t have one, they had to prove that they were on the road to expertise. The talent definitely was there, it was simply time and work that would make a difference.

The Solution and Implementation

Focus on listening first really help pave the way

It started with a “listening session” to determine what the team needs, their individual challenges and what they wanted out of their job. Despite being warned that this young team wouldn’t feel safe to talk, the session went amazing with every associate engaging from the first minute until 30 minutes after it ended. They didn’t want to stop talking and conversing to the point that only the first anonymous in meeting survey and exercise were performed. The rest of the carefully crafted presentation, surveys, exercises we put aside as the objective to get the team to think of their individual goals at work spurred lots of discussion and excitement.

Using a systematic method of prioritizing team and associate needs then matching them to the function’s objectives was the next step. This was carefully performed using an impact analysis where all the feedback was scored for

  • Scope of need on team and company - how many peas societies would it positively impact

  • Time and resources to address needs - to ensure it can be done quickly with little resources

  • Impact on team and associate performance - how it addressing that need can make a difference in staff morale and retention.

The prioritized actions to address the needs were crafted with supervisors snd disseminated with the team. A second session was then delivered to get the team to provide feedback so course adjustment can be made, ensuring the implementation of the actions were impactful. The results revealed excellent feedback from the team and associates and they noticed a difference on how they perceived their work and how they functioned as a team.

Individualized plans were then worked into the associates annual objectives that solidified the alignment of function specific to team member goals. This included training aligned with company objectives to improve expertise at work, opportunities to exhibit their leadership skills with guidance and support and a work place where time management and new efficient ways of working were implemented. This was the key to success.

The Impact

Over 69% of associates felt more connected with their purpose and that of the company

Once the individualized connections were made, associates have reported over 69% closer alignment with their goals and the company objectives. This was evident in a 27% on average improvement of job satisfaction for all associates that have undertaken the program.

While improvement in team job satisfaction was improved and important, what was even more significant was connecting associates to their purpose aligned to company objectives. It can have profound impact on team performance and cooperation. Especially for a young, new team with everything to prove !
